Introduction

Who we are

Chisholm Institute is a government-owned TAFE and is one of Victoria’s premier public vocational education and training (VET) providers, prominently placed across Melbourne’s south east manufacturing heartland and residential growth corridors. Chisholm website

Chisholm has metropolitan campus in Dandenong, Frankston, Berwick, Cranbourne, as well as Regional campuses in Rosebud (Mornington Peninsula campus), and Wonthaggi (Bass Coast campus). Chisholm Institute also includes Chisholm Online, which provides a selection of courses wholly online, and training in the Workplace via traineeships and apprenticeships.

I belong to the Business and IT department and my current role is supporting trainees in their workplace. Our trainees are located throughout Victoria, with most of mine located in Gippsland and the Mornington Peninsula.

Our plan for 2023 is to have our Certificate III trainees on Moodle. This will be phased in gradually with the initial stage to be a repository for assessment download and submission and to later add Resources and recommended interactions for students.

Our LMS

Chisholm uses Moodle as the Institute LMS. Chisholm has developed a number of templates that can be used on course and unit pages. The template used will depend on the course, unit, and functionality required.

Our Moodle is administered by the Learning Design and Technology Department. This department includes Education Technologists, Learning Designers, and LMS Administrators.

Data-informed Educational Plan

The aim of this report is to explore and research information on Educational Data and Learning Analytics with the view to presenting a plan on how we can use this data to improve our students' learning.

Data Access

For this project, I have been given reviewer access to our Moodle sites for the course BSB50120, Diploma of Business, for 2021 and 2022. This includes individual Moodles for each of the units that we deliver. I also have access to our student record system for demographic information and previous courses that students may have commenced or completed at Chisholm.

The main data available from Moodle will be student logs.

Limitations

While I can access and download the information, I don't have any particular analytics or data visualisation software, so will be relying on MS Excel to analyse and chart the information.

The Moodles that I have been given access to have only a limited number of activities that may provide meaningful data.
